Mastering the Proper Golf Swing for Consistent Contact and Distance Control

Golf is a game of precision and skill, and one of the key factors that separate amateur golfers from professionals is distance control. Being able to predict and control the distance of your shots is crucial for consistently hitting solid shots and improving your overall game. In this edition of Fix My Fault, we explore the significance of distance control in golf and how mastering hip sway can help you achieve more accurate and predictable shots.

Importance of a Proper Golf Swing

A proper golf swing involves multiple elements working together seamlessly. From the initial setup and stance to the follow-through, every aspect of the swing contributes to the overall outcome of the shot. Key components include grip, posture, alignment, and the swing path. However, one critical yet often overlooked element is the movement of the hips during the swing.

Hip Sway and Low Point Control in the Swing

Understanding Hip Sway

Hip sway refers to the lateral movement of the hips during the swing. Proper hip sway ensures that the hips rotate within a confined space, allowing for better control and predictability. Conversely, improper hip sway, where the lower body sways away from the target, is a common problem among amateur golfers. Using advanced technology like OptiMotion, it's evident that many golfers struggle with maintaining proper hip sway, leading to inconsistent shot distances.

Low Point Control

Low point control refers to the position of the clubhead in relation to the ground at the moment of impact. Achieving consistent low point control is crucial for clean ball contact and solid shots. A proper golf swing involves shifting the lower body towards the target during the downswing. This forward movement of the hips helps bring the low point of the swing in front of the golf ball, ensuring clean ball contact.

In the video presented, GOLFTEC Coach Tim Sam demonstrates the importance of proper hip sway for distance control. Coach Sam uses Collin Morikawa as a perfect example of low point control, emphasizing the correct hip movement throughout the swing. On the contrary, Coach Sam himself demonstrates common flaws in hip sway that lead to inconsistent shot distances.

Drill to Master Proper Hip Sway

To improve your distance control and master hip sway, incorporate the following drill into your practice routine:

  1. Address Position: Start with the address position, slightly favoring the lead side of your lower body. This initial positioning sets the stage for moving the low point in front of the ball during the swing.
  2. Backstroke Rotation: Begin with small backstrokes, focusing on rotating your hips without any lateral movement back. This rotation helps maintain stability while preparing for the downswing.
  3. Forward Drive: Emphasize driving your lower body towards the target, ensuring that the lead hip extends beyond the lead ankle at the moment of impact. This movement facilitates the forward shift of the low point and promotes solid contact with the ball.
  4. Gradual Progression: Start with small and deliberate movements, ensuring excellent contact with the ball. As you become more proficient in this skill, gradually increase the size and speed of your hip movements, further enhancing low point control and distance predictability.

Coach Sam’s low point drill will have you making solid contact in no time.

Key Golf Swing Tips

Maintain a Straight Lead Arm

One common issue among golfers is keeping the lead arm straight throughout the swing. A bent lead arm can lead to inconsistent contact and a lack of power. Here are some tips to help you maintain a straight lead arm:

  1. Push Outwards: As you take the club back, try to feel like you’re pushing your palms into the ground and maintain that push throughout the swing.
  2. Right-Hand Support: Use your right hand to grab your left wrist and stretch it straight. Keep a stretch or push out with your right hand into the backswing.
  3. Monitor Position: At the top of your backswing, check to ensure your lead arm is straight. Avoid separating your elbows and keep them close to your body.
  4. Consistent Check: When the shaft is parallel to the ground, check again to ensure your lead arm is straight. This helps avoid excessive elbow flex and promotes consistent contact.

Hitting the Ball First Before the Ground

A fundamental aspect of a proper golf swing is making contact with the ball before the ground. This ensures solid shots and better distance control. Here are some tips to achieve this:

  1. Proper Setup: Ensure your weight is slightly favoring your lead side at address. This promotes a downward strike on the ball.
  2. Hip Movement: Focus on shifting your hips towards the target during the downswing. This helps move the low point in front of the ball.
  3. Forward Shaft Lean: At impact, ensure your hands are ahead of the clubhead, creating a forward shaft lean. This helps strike the ball first.
  4. Practice Drills: Use drills that emphasize hitting the ball before the ground. For example, place a towel a few inches behind the ball and practice hitting shots without disturbing the towel.

Alignment Drill

  1. Use Alignment Sticks: Place alignment sticks on the ground to help with proper alignment.
  2. Feet Alignment: Ensure your feet, hips, and shoulders are aligned parallel to the target line.
  3. Practice Swings: Make practice swings while checking your alignment with the sticks.

Tempo Drill

  1. Count Rhythms: Practice counting the rhythm of your swing (e.g., 1-2-3 for the backswing and 4-5-6 for the downswing).
  2. Metronome: Use a metronome to maintain a consistent tempo.
  3. Slow Swings: Practice slow, deliberate swings to ingrain a smooth tempo.
